For this project, we were required to target one of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within a particular country.
I decided to focus my efforts on tackling India’s problem with the spreading of false news stories via Whatsapp. In terms of SDG’s, this tackles No.16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. India’s problem has been described as an epidemic, however the actual problem stems much deeper than those leading the headlines in Western news outlets. Through my research, I came to the conclusion that the most prominent form of fake news was that concerning ‘nation building’ - specifically in relation to Hindu Nationalism. I realised to create a meaningful campaign, my posters had to address:
The average person's participation in the problem
What to look out for/become aware of
Simple steps to remedy the situation
The idea of having a receipt (a twist on the famous ‘read’ receipt marking whether the receiver has opened a message) was the first idea
I developed and set the precedent for how I undertook the rest of the project.
A combination of scanning and layering dominates each design, with the majority of
the emphasis placed on the colouring and message rather than the content. I wanted each poster to feel gritty and yet realistic; a slick corporate design would not have stood out
